AMP's sustainability strategy

At Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP), we stand for more than just a strong brand or a solid reputation. We’re united by a shared Purpose – We make packaging for good. This Purpose is the core of who we are as a company. It drives everything we do – from delivering inspiring innovations for our customers – to creating a positive and supportive environment for our people, who are key to our ongoing growth and success.

Our sustainability strategy is built on three key pillars: Emissions, Ecology and Social. Our goal is to create packaging for good by minimising our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, reducing our environmental footprint, and promoting circularity to ensure minimal impact on the planet. We are committed to investing in our people and the communities we serve.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do, and we are dedicated to driving meaningful change through initiatives that have a positive impact at every level. We have set ambitious, SBTi-approved GHG emissions targets and are fully committed to meeting these milestones.

We actively encourage community engagement across our organisation, with a particular focus on educational development in the communities where we operate.

To ensure we are meeting our sustainability goals, we continuously track, monitor, and measure our progress. By promoting circularity and minimising environmental impact, our metal packaging products stand out for their high recyclability – addressing both sustainability challenges and the ambitions of our customers.

Infographic outlining Ardagh Metal Packaging’s sustainability priorities under two main pillars: Emissions & Ecology and Social. The Emissions & Ecology section includes goals to minimize greenhouse gas emissions by using 100% renewable electricity, improving energy efficiency, increasing recycled content, sourcing sustainably, designing innovative products, reducing VOC emissions, and using low-carbon transport. It also aims to minimize ecological impact through water management, zero waste to landfill, increased recycling, and promoting circularity. On the right, icons for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are displayed, including SDGs 7, 12, 17, and 13. The Social section focuses on people and communities, including maintaining a safe and healthy workplace, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion, empowering employees in social initiatives, strengthening local communities through projects and donations, and investing in education. On the right, icons for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are displayed, including SDGs 3, 4, and 5. A footer box labeled 'Sustainability Filter' states: 'Sustainability only has a sustainable impact if it is economically viable both long and short term.'

Sustainability accreditations and associations

AMP works closely with influential industry associations to increase recycling rates and the availability of recycled material for metal packaging. Working in partnership, we support improved packaging recycling legislation by highlighting positive recycling examples in the communities where we have production facilities. We also directly invest in new, highly efficient recycling operations.

Operating across the regions where we are present, the members of these associations include the major players of the global beverage can industry, including suppliers. These groups positively represent the beverage can industry, educating stakeholders on the environmental and business benefits of the products. They also communicate to legislators the economic and community benefits of recycling cans.

Every region we serve has clear recycling goals for aluminium beverage cans. As a member of Metal Packaging Europe (MPE) we support its ambition to achieve a 100% recycling rate by 2030. The Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) in the United States published a recycling roadmap and primer announcing a 70% recycling rate goal by 2030, 80% by 2040 and 90% by 2050. In Brazil, our industry association Abralatas is committed to maintaining one of the world’s highest recycling rates at 100%.

AMP has been instrumental in driving collaboration across the value chain to develop a standardised Beverage Can Recycled Content methodology. In partnership with CMI, global can manufacturers, and metal sheet producers, we are proud to have achieved this standardisation. We expect this calculation improvement to enhance performance across the entire value chain for all producers.
