Royal Swinkels and Ardagh Metal Packaging unlock new opportunities for alcohol-free wine

Ardagh Metal Packaging (AMP) has partnered with Royal Swinkels on the launch of BarLoca. An alcohol-free wine in AMP’s dedicated 250 ml wine can. BarLoca is made from Southern Italian wine and dealcoholised at Royal Swinkels’ brewery in Lieshout. BarLoca Bianco and Rosso are now available in The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany in a semi-matt can built specifically for wine: it keeps out light and air and combines the quality and character of wine with the convenience and versatility of aluminium packaging.

As the only can manufacturer in Europe producing dedicated wine cans, AMP brings unique expertise to this growing category. AMP’s solution has been developed with the specific requirements of wine in mind, providing brands with a packaging format that protects product quality while offering consumers a modern and convenient way to enjoy wine. The can helps protect the wine from light and air, while its specially designed interior lining helps preserve its quality and taste. Lightweight and unbreakable, the aluminium can is easy to transport, chill and store, while the single-serve format offers convenience.

The launch comes at a time when the beverage market is changing. No- and low-alcohol beverages continue to gain relevance as consumers seek greater choice and flexibility in their drinking habits. Many consumers are increasingly looking for health-conscious and convenient beverage choices, while expectations around taste and quality remain high. These developments are creating new opportunities for wine in cans. The format combines the benefits of aluminium with the convenience required for a wider range of consumption occasions, as cans are well suited to social gatherings, meals, outdoor occasions, festivals, terraces and everyday moments at home.

Flemming Morth, Head of New Drinks at Royal Swinkels: “With BarLoca 0.0% wine, we set out to do what alcohol-free beer has done for beer drinkers. We wanted wine drinkers to keep the wine experience, also when they choose to skip the alcohol. The can opens up new occasions, because it is single serve and easy to take along. The 250 ml size makes it easy to pour just one glass, switch between red and white, and have wine at moments when a full bottle doesn't make sense. Together with Ardagh Metal Packaging, we found a can that preserves the quality of the wine and stands out on the shelf.”

“BarLoca is an innovative 0.0% wine concept, and it deserves a packaging solution that reflects that innovation. By combining Royal Swinkels’ beverage expertise with our experience in wine cans, we are bringing an innovative product to market in a modern packaging format that combines quality and convenience. We are excited to continue our long-standing partnership with Royal Swinkels and to support the launch of BarLoca,” said Gerlof Toenhake, Director of Marketing and Business Development, Ardagh Metal Packaging-Europe.

BarLoca wine is available through the BarLoca webshop and selected retail partners in the Netherlands.
