Water treatment programme in Brazil

Published June 15, 2022

At Ardagh, we take water stewardship seriously. Access to fresh water is essential to everyone and we continually investigate how our operations can reduce consumption and conserve one of our most precious resources.

In 2020, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) awarded Ardagh its Leadership Class ratings for sustainability performance, including an A- for water management – this is within the highest category rating.

Some of our water projects include water recirculation, treatment and recycling. AMP – South America uses a Membrane Biological Reactor (MBR) or a waste-water treatment on-site at our Alagoinhas production facility. The MBR enables us to treat waste-water from the facility and discharge it safely under parameters defined by Brazil’s Environmental Agency. The current capacity for the new MBR is 15 m³/h.

Projects like this have enabled us to achieve an absolute reduction of 7% in water usage and have allowed us to track ahead of plan in our 2025 target of a 9% absolute reduction in water usage. Read more about our sustainability stewardship in our 2021 Sustainability Report here.
